What was your first show ever?
My first show was Oliver with Chilliwack Musical Theatre when I was in high school. I needed fine arts volunteer hours for school, and my sister was in the cast, so I thought I would ask about working backstage. I spent the run making gruel and sausages, and have been doing musical theatre ever since!
What is your past experience with theatre, and what has been your favourite previous project?
My most recent project was assistant conductor for La Boheme at Opera NUOVA in Edmonton, which was exciting as it was my first experience conducting opera. I’ve also played for productions with Chilliwack Opera Troupe, and University of Manitoba Opera Theatre. On the musical theatre side, I progressed from gruel maker to production manager and pit musician, and since starting Secondary Characters in 2010, I’ve music directed several productions. I’m not sure I can pick a favourite, but I did love being part of the small group of committed cast and crew of The Last Five Years last summer.
What is the most exciting element of this story for you?
Well, being the conductor, I’m pretty excited for the music! We have a 20 piece orchestra this year, which brings a full sound to what is really a movie score. Having just returned to BC a few days ago, I have also enjoyed hearing the great work the cast has done so far.
