Emylee is super stoked to be a part of The Wizard of Oz. Though her friends would argue that she spends a little too much time backstage, she intends to take part in many, many more productions. A big thank you to everyone involved, & to those who aren't? ENJOY THE SHOW!
Jen has worked on many shows in a variety of backstage roles. This will be her second show with Secondary Characters, after last summer's 'Oklahoma'. Theatre is a passion of Jen's, and helping assure the show goes smoothly so it can become a passion for others, makes the backstage chaos all worth it! A big thanks to all in 'Oz' for this opportunity, and to everyone joining us on this journey down the yellow brick road.
This is Sarah's first production with Secondary Characters, but she has been a theatre junkie since her first performance in CSOPA's Fiddler in the Roof, when she was nine. Watching the magical elements of the Land of Oz take shape has been her favourite part of this production.
Matt has often said he is a tether between an artist’s dreams, and the technician’s reality. He has taken part in four of the most recent productions Secondary Characters has brought to Chilliwack in some way. He has built a prop/cast mate (Milky White) from Into the Woods, constructed a small farm in Oklahoma!, created graphics for The Last Five Years, and for The Wizard of Oz he managed all three facets (props, set construction, and graphics). His love for theatre isn’t for the show, but for the people that it brings together, and the technical challenges that it presents. Thank you Emily for introducing him to this circle of people, but most of all for walking with him along the way.
Maria was drawn to work on this show by her passion and love for all aspects of the theatre, it was another step to chasing her dream to become a theatre renaissance woman. This show was a wonderful learning experience for her and she has the entire backstage crew to thank for that. She was first intrigued by the story of Oz as a little girl as she was always fascinated with the possibility of fantastical worlds. It was one of the first stories to inspire her imagination that still resonates with her up until now. Her favorite character is Dorothy, as she is depicted as a sweet, but still strong and able girl with an adventurous heart. She’s loyal and true not only to herself, but everyone she meets.
Who is your favourite character from The Wizard of Oz and why?
The Scarecrow. He's the first companion, such a genuine person (slash scarecrow?), and his opening number is so much fun.
What was your first show ever?
It was a high school production called "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's...Nerdman?!" Also known to us as just "Nerdman". Tim Howe (The Last Five Years, Snoopy in You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown) was also in that one.
What was your primary introduction to the story of The Wizard of Oz, the movie, or the books? And - -what is your memory of your first impression of the story?
I knew the movie way before the books. I've actually still never read any of the books, or any of the "spin-off" or alternate version books. I loved that movie as a kid, my grandparents owned a copy so I used to look forward to watching it when we visited them. Though the monkey scene was always scary.
How long have you been working in your field for?
I actually work in theatre, so since that first production mentioned earlier it's been a little more than eight years. Aside from doing shows, I work for different theatres in the FOH realm and have been doing that (and getting paid) for about four and a half years.
