Into the Woods combines the well-known fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Ridinghood with the story of the Baker and his Wife who desperately want a child. Unfortunately, the Baker has been cursed with childlessness by the Witch and must collect a series of objects to break the spell; a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. In doing so, the Baker and his Wife run into the other fairy tale characters, who are each in search of their own desires, and by the end of the first act, everyone has what they wished for. However, they later discover that their actions have far reaching effects, and their world comes crashing around them, quite literally, as the Giant comes down the beanstalk to revenge her dead husband. After blaming the disaster on each other in turn, the characters finally realize that they must work together to fight against the giant.
The show features the brilliant and thought-provoking music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, including the popular Children Will Listen, with book by James Lapine.
Secondary Characters Musical Theatre Society is a registered not-for-profit musical theatre company, based in Chilliwack, British Columbia. We present a full scale musical each summer, which combines the talent of performers from across the Fraser Valley, from Hope to Vancouver. The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
